Level 3
Canine Nutritionist

Strengthen your professional advice around diet with the IICBT Level 3 Certificate in Canine Nutrition, a practical, evidence-led qualification for trainers, behaviour practitioners, walkers, groomers, pet care professionals and serious owners who want to talk confidently about what dogs are eating.
This Level 3 canine nutrition course focuses on how diet relates to behaviour, energy levels, body condition and long term health, without pushing a single brand or feeding trend. You will learn how to take clear diet histories, assess whether a current diet is broadly appropriate, and suggest safe, welfare-led changes while working alongside veterinary care.
By the end of the course you will feel more confident discussing nutrition with clients, spotting red flags that require veterinary input, and using simple tools to monitor progress over time.
MODULES INCLUDED
You will study four focused modules that take you from general feeding knowledge to structured, scope-aware nutrition support:

The UK’s #1 training provider for canine behaviour and training
With long standing expertise in developing high quality canine professionals, we understand what it takes to succeed in a competitive, fast growing field. We train dog trainers and behaviour practitioners who are more employable, better prepared for real cases, confident with clients, and committed to ethical, evidence based practice.
If you are new to the industry, our Level 5 Diploma in Canine Training and Instruction is the place to begin. It is recognised as a clear benchmark for those entering professional practice and gives you the skills to train dogs safely, design structured training plans and work effectively with owners.
If you are an experienced trainer aiming to move into complex behaviour work, our Level 6 Diploma in Canine Behaviour Practice builds on that foundation. You will develop advanced skills in behavioural assessment, case formulation, risk management and working closely with veterinary teams.
You can also strengthen your profile with focused short courses in areas such as puppy training, first aid and nutrition. These programmes help you deepen knowledge, refine your practice and stay current with sector expectations.
Step 1. Download The Prospectus
Start by downloading the Level 3 Certificate in Canine Nutrition prospectus. You will see the topics covered, sample tools such as diet history forms and body condition charts, and how this course fits alongside training, walking and behaviour work. You can confirm that this is the right way to strengthen your advice before you commit.
Step 2. Talk to an IICBT Adviser
Next, you speak with an adviser who understands how nutrition can support your current service. They will look at the kind of clients you work with, the questions you are already being asked about food, your long term goals and how much time you have to study. Together you agree a study route, discuss fast track or steady options, explore payment plans and, if it fits, link nutrition into a package that supports your wider career.
Step 3. Get Enrolled and set Up in Your Portal
If you decide to enrol, your adviser completes the process with you and walks you through your nutrition course space. You see where to find lessons, reading, practical tools and assessment guidance, and how to ask tutors about real diet scenarios. You leave the call knowing what to open first and how to pace your study.
Step 4. Study, Complete Assessment, Get Qualified
You then work through the course at a pace that fits around your work. Most learners complete the Level 3 Canine Nutrition course in around 2 to 4 weeks. You watch tutor led lessons, practise using forms and charts with real or example dogs, complete short assessments and your final diet review assignment, then receive your IICBT Level 3 Certificate in Canine Nutrition and Canine Nutrition Adviser title.
Step 5. Start or Grow Your Business With Our Support
Once qualified, you can move beyond guessing or repeating marketing claims about food. You use structured tools to review diets, explain options and suggest sensible changes within a clear scope of practice. This helps you support better outcomes in training and behaviour work, build trust with owners and vets, and position yourself as someone who talks about nutrition in a grounded, professional way.

Unlimited tutor Access
Ask questions as often as you need. You get direct access to practising trainers and behaviour specialists, not a ticket system and stock replies.
Study From Anywhere
Log in, watch lessons, download templates and keep going. All core teaching lives online so you can build your new career from your sofa, not a classroom.
Support to Build a Business
We talk pricing, services, marketing and client handling, so you leave with a plan to earn from your skills, not just a certificate for the wall.
Training People Trust
Your courses are backed by an independent institute and recognised through the iPET Network PDR scheme, giving you something credible to show vets, employers and clients.
Most learners use the Level 3 Certificate in Canine Nutrition to increase the value of the work they already do, rather than creating a full-time nutrition-only role from the outset. In practice, this often means adding a structured diet review and written summary to puppy or behaviour packages, offering 45–60 minute “nutrition check-in” calls for existing clients, or building simple weight management programmes that sit alongside training, walking or day-care services.
In many parts of the UK, practitioners charge in the region of £40 to £200 for a nutrition-focused review with a follow-up report, depending on experience and how the service is packaged. If you added just 2–4 nutrition reviews per week alongside your existing work, that could realistically represent an additional £4,000 to £15,000 per year in revenue. For some practitioners, a strong reputation in nutrition support also leads to more training and behaviour referrals, as owners actively seek out professionals who can advise on both training and diet.

Fees and Payment Options

What if I have no science background and only know basic feeding advice?
That is a common starting point. The course assumes you care about what dogs are eating but have mostly picked up information from brands, social media and other owners. You will be guided through the fundamentals of nutrition, body condition and feeding choices so you can have structured, sensible conversations about diet without pretending to be a vet.
Do I have to work as a trainer or behaviour practitioner for this to be relevant?
No. The course is ideal for trainers and behaviour practitioners, but it is also valuable for walkers, groomers, day care staff, rescue workers and serious owners. Anywhere you are talking to people about their dogs, diet will come up, and this qualification helps you respond with more than “ask your vet” or “I feed this to my own dog”.
How long will it take me to start using this with clients or my own dogs?
You can usually start applying what you learn within the first module or two, by taking clearer diet histories and looking differently at body condition. As you progress, you will add tools and confidence. On your call, your adviser can help you plan how to bring nutrition into your existing services without overwhelming yourself.
I have read blogs and brand training on nutrition. How is this different?
Most free content and brand training either sells a particular product or leaves you with conflicting opinions. The Level 3 Certificate is independent of specific brands and gives you a structured way of thinking about diet, needs and red flags. It exists to help you give grounded, scope aware advice, not to push one feeding philosophy or marketing message.
What if I am worried about overstepping into veterinary territory?
That concern is healthy. A big part of the course is learning where your scope starts and ends, how to recognise when something must go to a vet, and how to phrase your advice so you support owners without diagnosing or prescribing. You will come away clearer on what is appropriate to say, not stuck avoiding nutrition discussions altogether.
What happens once I qualify?
You can describe yourself as an IICBT Canine Nutrition Adviser with a Level 3 qualification behind you. That strengthens your profile as someone who can talk sensibly about diet as part of overall welfare, especially when combined with training, behaviour or walking work. You will also have ready made forms and charts you can use straight away in assessments and reviews.
Do you offer payment plans, or do I have to pay everything upfront?
You do not have to pay in one lump sum if that does not suit you. On your call, your adviser will explain the fee and any payment options available so you can choose an approach that fits your budget and the role nutrition will play in your work.
Why should I choose IICBT for nutrition instead of brand training or free blogs?
Most nutrition content is either marketing dressed up as advice or conflicting opinion pieces that leave you more confused than when you started. The IICBT Level 3 Certificate is independent of specific brands and built by people who work with behaviour, health and real owners every day. You get a grounded, evidence-led framework and tools you can actually use in consults, so you can talk about diet with confidence instead of repeating whatever the last salesperson or influencer said.
